2021 marked a much needed return to in-person racing and a big step towards reclaiming life as we knew it before Covid-19. The 13th Annual Malibu Half Marathon, 5K & 1/2K Kids Run presented by Rusnak BMW was one of the best running events on the West Coast, selling out for the fourth year in a row and raising over $46,000 for Boys & Girls Club of Malibu and Girls On The Run Los Angeles. We loved spending the weekend together again and feeling connected as a community.
“One of the highlights of the weekend was our first inaugural ½K Kids’ Fun Run,” said race director Erica Segel. “There’s something magical about seeing kids age 4 to 10 years old discover how empowering it is to accomplish something and earn a medal all by themselves.”
“Another moment of inspiration was seeing Cynthia Reyes push her disabled brother Pedro along the 5K course. They crossed the finish line with a chip time of 29:33. Pedro’s smile after the race is something I never want to forget” Erica added.

What's more, this year is also an incredibly meaningful and emotional year for Run Malibu. In December 2021, we sadly said goodbye to our co-founder and barefoot running legend Alberto Perusset.
Alberto believed in running barefoot as the natural way to run. “After all, we were born barefoot. That’s how we were designed” he often said. He ran over 253 full marathons, 214 of them barefoot, breaking the world record November 2019. He also ran 37+ half marathons and 24 5k/10ks.
For all of us he was a friend, a brother, an inspiration to thrive for more, to always find the positive in every situation, to set goals to work towards, and most importantly to truly believe in ourselves, always!
One of the most amazing and soul touching demonstrations of his impact within the walkers/runners’ community was when hundreds of posts, messages and testimonies come pouring in after the news of his early passing.
We've never felt more proud or appreciative of the supportive and loving community we’re part of!
To honor the great man he was, this year is dedicated to his legacy and, as a tribute, the iconic runner of the Run Malibu logo has been replaced with the shape of Alberto's distinctive barefoot silhouette. #MalibuForAlberto
