Malibu is a coastal paradise known for its stunning beaches, celebrity homes, and laid-back beach vibe. Beyond its picturesque coastline, Malibu offers a wealth of recreational activities that cater to locals and visitors alike. Whether you’re an ocean enthusiast, prefer the mountains, or simply looking to unwind, Malibu has something to offer for everyone. It is truly The Good Life! Here’s a guide to some of the best recreational activities in Malibu.
Surfing and Watersports
Malibu is a world-renowned surfing destination, particularly famous for its long right-hand breaks. Beginners and seasoned surfers alike flock to Malibu’s beaches to catch the perfect wave. There is an abundance of board rental shops in town if you’re visiting, and while the popular waves can get crowded, there are plenty of beaches that offer a mellow atmosphere and have space for everyone.
TOP SPOTS:

- Malibu Surfrider Beach: Known for its iconic waves and vibrant surf culture. A great wave but can get very crowded.
- Zuma Beach: Offers consistent waves suitable for all skill levels and plenty of space for everyone. Sandy ocean floor, bathrooms and parking is easy! Broad beach (just north of Zuma) is also excellent for learning and a mellow wave.
- Leo Carillo State Beach: Ideal for both surfing and paddleboarding. Rocky but offers a great ride.
Other Watersports:
- Paddleboarding: Explore the calm waters and just about anywhere up and down the Malibu coast!
- Kayaking: Paddle around Point Dume and take in the stunning shoreline.
- Snorkeling and Diving: Discover underwater life in the clear waters and kelp forests around Leo Carrillo State Park or around Point Dume.
Hiking and Nature Walks
Malibu's diverse landscape provides excellent hiking opportunities with hundreds of miles of trails that offer breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, rugged cliffs, and lush canyons. Be sure to come prepared with water, snacks and share your location or plans with friends or family beforehand as cell service can be spotty or nonexistent and the terrain and weather can be unforgiving. Safety first!
TOP TRAILS:

Solstice Canyon: Features a relatively easy hike with waterfalls, ruins, and great ocean views. Option to make the hike more challenging if you take the single track loop (this also has the best views).
- Escondido Falls: A more challenging hike leading to one of the tallest waterfalls in the Santa Monica Mountains. Can get very crowded so we suggest visiting on a weekday.
- Malibu Creek State Park: Just up Malibu Canyon is one of the best state parks in the country. Many films and T.V. Shows have been filmed here - once you step foot into the park, you’ll see why. Expect a beautiful, lush valley with a river running through it, surrounded by the impressive Santa Monica mountains. There are many miles of trail here with different route options. Hike to the M.A.S.H. filming site or stop by the visitors center to learn more about the ecology and history of the area.
Beach Activities
Malibu's beaches are perfect for relaxation and recreation. Soft sand, sunshine and the warm Pacific Ocean await you! Spend a day lounging on the sand, swimming, or exploring tide pools… you really can’t go wrong!
TOP BEACHES

- El Matador State Beach: Known for its stunning rock formations and sea caves.
- Zuma Beach: A family-friendly beach with ample amenities and space for beach games.

Malibu's unique microclimate produces excellent wines. Exploring the local vineyards is a truly delightful way to spend an afternoon.

- Rosenthal Wine Bar & Patio: Enjoy ocean views while sipping on local wines.
