Q: Why are you running the Malibu Half Marathon this year?

A: I am running the Malibu Half Marathon again this year because it’s an opportunity to honor my body, spirit, and ancestors through movement. As Indigenous women, our connection to the land and community is vital, and running allows me to deepen that bond. Malibu’s beautiful landscape, situated on Chumash territory, reminds me of the importance of respecting and caring for our environment and honoring the lands that sustain us.

I want to run again through the field where many jornaleros work tirelessly, picking the fruits and vegetables that nourish our tables. I want to honor their hard work, resilience, and the sacrifices they make every day to sustain our communities. Their labor reminds me of the strength and dignity inherent in all who work the land, and I run to acknowledge and uplift their contributions.

Q: What inspires you to run? What does running mean to you?

A: Running is a sacred act for me an expression of resilience, resistance, and connection It’s a way to honor my ancestors who fought for our survival and to reclaim my own strength and voice. For me, running is a spiritual journey that grounds me in the present, connects me to the land in every breath and step and reminds me of the importance of caring for myself and my community. It’s also a form of resistance against the narratives that often seek to diminish Indigenous women’s voices and spirits. Running means honoring my body, my history, and my future

Q: What is one tip you would give to someone just starting their running journey or running a half marathon for the first time?

A: My tip is to listen to your body and honor your pace. Running is a deeply personal journey, not a competition. Celebrate every small victory whether it’s lacing up your shoes, completing your first mile, or simply showing up with intention. Trust in your resilience and remember that your strength comes from within. Be patient with yourself, and let your spirit guide your journey. Every step forward is a testament to your courage and perseverance.
